This is the third in a series of blog posts titled "Youth Artist Showcase". In this series we'll explore up and coming artists, asking them about the work they do, what inspires them, and much more.
Who are you?
My name is Kayleigh Isenor, I am 21 years old and I am from the Eastern shore.
What is your artistic background?
I grew up creating art mostly drawing, painting from time to time for fun. I took art classes all throughout high school and then pursued that in post secondary education. I currently attend NSCAD university, going into my fourth year.
What kind of artwork do you do?
I currently do a lot of digital work mostly graphic illustration and I do some tattoo design, very little and limited painting. I would say even though I try to stick with drawing most of the time I like to branch out and do a mix of different things just so I don’t get bored of doing one thing all the time.
What kinds of things inspire your work?
I would say take inspiration from really weird places. Sometimes I take inspiration from things going on around me things that are kind of fads or popular on social media. I would say most of the time the inspiration that I get is from previous ideas that I write down usually happens when I have a long bus rides whether that had been from growing up and taking the school bus to now and taking public transit to the university I go to. It gives me a lot of time to think And really get in my own head space and then I’m able to just jot that down in my notes typically on my phone. I definitely feel like I also get inspiration from the people that are around me I think being surrounded by a lot of different kinds of people and very creative people as well has given me inspiration where it’s adding onto an idea or just their physical presence in that time.
Who/What are your biggest influences?
I think most of my influences come from graphic illustration artists, comic book artist’s. I really enjoy styles Like Jim Lee and J. Scott Campbell. I also really enjoy some styles from different animations and definitely try to work towards combining my styles with things that I see from, say Disney films, Pixar, Studio Ghibli.
Do you have any favourite or standout pieces of art? If so, why are they?
I think some of my favourite pieces that I’ve done are pieces that aren’t even quite finished yet. I have some sketches that I’ve done where they’ve gotten to a point where I don’t want to finish them because I like how they look when they’re not finished. I like the sketchiness of them and if I were to add harder lines or if I were to add colour or anything like that I feel like it would take away from it. I also have a few Games that I’ve done that I worked really hard to get them to be as good as they are. I’m not a painter and for me to go out of my way to either paint something for someone or even paint something for myself is hard for me, so I think any painting that I do where it gets to a point where I can look at it and say that I’m happy with it is a really good painting for me.
Do you want to make a career from your art? If so, where would you like it to take you?
I would love to be able to make a career from my art. I am very open for the levels of which my art could take me anywhere from doing a few commissions for various people, to having it shown in an art gallery, to tattooing, to selling art pieces for home staging purposes. I feel like for me there’s really no limit at which I would want to go with my art. Of course the dream is to dream big and see how far I can go.
Are there any resources you wish were more available in the community for artists?
Resources that I wish were more available in the community of artists if I’m speaking specifically for the Eastern shore I would say more community-based art forms and classes. Specifically directed towards youth. So I think one thing that I didn’t really have growing up besides going to school would be community-based art practices involving people outside of school or even just getting people together from school that had an interest in art. If I am speaking about Halifax as a whole I would say the same thing but I would also think that especially for our art university, Supplies is really hard to obtain when you are on a specific budget because you’re a student and even though you can receive student loans, material fees and things like that to help you have better access it’s still limited in some ways. That being said I think community-based activities would be beneficial even to those who aren’t necessarily looking to pursue a career in making art. Do you have any upcoming projects or things people can look forward to?
Things that are upcoming for me at this time Would be the beginning of my fourth year at NSCAD. This year as drawing rep I will have a table at an upcoming event just to introduce myself to first year students and returning students. I plan on taking on a few commissions hopefully for tattoo design and this year if possible I will also have a table at our art sale events.
