Youth Artist Showcase: Jack Sanders

This is the first in a series of blog posts titled "Youth Artist Showcase". In this series we'll explore up and coming artists, asking them about the work they do, what inspires them, and much more.

Who are you? -Jack Sanders, 17 years old, living in West Jeddore What is your artistic background? -I took lessons for a couple years, taught by Shane Doucette from the Oyster Pond area.

-I also took a Creature design course provided by NSCAD. -Both of these programs were focused on traditional sketching, but I decided to switch things up a bit later on and try other mediums.

What kind of artwork do you do? -Pencil and charcoal sketches, typically realistic portraits. -Ink drawings of cartoony characters. -Foam fabricated armour pieces, for costumes. -2D and 3D game assets.

What kinds of things inspire your work? -The nature, people and objects around me. -Forms of media I grew up with, like shows, games and books. Who/What are your biggest influences? -Some names that come to mind are: Mike Mignola, Frank Frazetta, Jamie Hewlett, Karl Kopinski and Mateusz Skutnik. Skutnik especially.

-Any one of my grandparents prove to be great sources, for their various and unique aesthetics and characteristics. -Music is a good source too. The obvious Gorillaz and the abscure Oh Sees are pretty cool.

Do you have any favourite or standout

pieces of art? If so, why are they? -There's a painting by Frank McCarthy that he did for the film Once Upon A Time in the West. Love the perspective and dynamic of it. Just awesome. -If this question is referring to my art, then I guess it's an ink I did of a horse drawn hearse, done for inktober.

"Horse drawn Hearse" by Jack Sanders Do you want to make a career from your art? If so, where would you like it to take you? -Looking to get into 3D animation or modeling, either for animated films or games. Planning on NSCAD for the first years of postsecondary. I'd like to eventually work for a local animation team. Are there any resources you wish were more available in the community for artists? -A local art supplies store would be much appreciated lol. -I'd really like more exposure to artwork around here. I think our community is rich with great talent, and we should be exploiting that. Have artist's work be shown and/or advertised everywhere around the community. Have artists share their talents with eager-learning community members. Have more collaborations and art shows and whatnot. Is there anything you’d like people to know about you or your work that we haven’t touched on? -Of the different mediums I work in, pencils are still my favourite. Simple, easy to use.

And finally, do you have any upcoming projects or things people can look forward to? -I've sent a couple drawings to Fresh Prints, in Halifax. They'll be printing them on T-shirts. They're only printing a few, for me and a couple others, but I'll likely be sending them more designs down the road, for them to print off, possibly in higher quantity. -I've got a game in the works now called Systems: Subnominal. A top-down shooter where you play as a space ship with the goal of taking out massive space robots and stuff. Should be fun. -I'll be doing more drawing in general, nothing specific in mind, but I'll be posting a lot of it on my Instagram.
